Global Purchasing Director

The Global Purchasing Director is accountable for the development of the overall procurement and sourcing strategies, supplier development and selection, price negotiation, and documenting the contracts pertaining to all categories within the enterprise worldwide. The Global Purchasing Director leads and works collaboratively with Purchasing and Sourcing Managers to implement all strategic procurement and sourcing plans and initiatives for the firm. The director will also oversee purchasing/sourcing operations in China and Vietnam.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Executes a dual sourcing strategy for most categories to ensure competitive pricing and to have more than one source of supply.
  • Continually evaluate supply lead times to find ways to shorten them.
  • Develops a strategic plan for procurement and sourcing.
  • Assists the stakeholders with budget development.
  • Assures alignment between corporate and business unit goals and objectives.
  • Works closely with marketing and product development in the sourcing of new products.
  • Directs the procurement/sourcing team to perform an in-depth analysis of the assigned categories on a global basis. Fully understands all aspects of the consumer goods industry including supply and demand, cost drivers, target costs, technology, supplier profiles, and capabilities.
  • Directs the PFE (Plaid Far East) sourcing team to perform an analysis of their assigned categories.
  • Identifies and leads projects, in conjunction with suppliers and the business units, which continually reduce costs through the supply chain.
  • Fully understands the capabilities of the supply base, including the supplier’s supply base.
  • Work on collective purchasing strategies for the supplier’s raw materials.
  • Develops and executes optimal sourcing strategies for all product categories, meeting the needs of the business units and maximizing value.
  • Selects suppliers based on best in class and ensures delivery of consistently quality products.
  • Provides business units with future price trends and budget cost projections.
  • Develops contracts with suppliers and verifies the correct pricing is reflected in our system.
  • Manages the purchasing team worldwide.
  • Annual cost savings delivered year over year.
  • Long-term sourcing plans created and implemented.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or Supply Chain.
  • 7-12 years of relevant experience in consumer goods procurement and supply chain management.
  • Must understand the process for suppliers receiving material as well as transportation issues to shorten lead time.
  • Strong computer skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office/Lotus/ Excel
  • Superior problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent negotiation and conflict management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to mentor, manage and develop staff.
  • Strong analytical skills and conceptual thinking that drives strategy and creates innovative options.
  • Solid business judgment, able to anticipate the impact of decisions and initiatives.
  • Ability to work and lead cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate as an effective team member.
  • Good communication and presentation skills and the ability to gain executive support.
  • Creative thought process.
  • Strategic sourcing experience in the consumer products industry preferred.
  • Occasional travel (International travel)
