FAQs

How can I repair a torn stencil?
If you tear a stencil, repair it by applying a small amount of transparent tape to both sides of the tear. Use a utility knife to cut away tape from inside the cutout areas of the design.
Should I clean my brush when I am switching colors?
Yes, it is advisable to clean your paintbrush when changing colors as well as after each painting session.
How do I prepare a wood piece or plywood paneling for stenciling?
For unfinished wood: Apply a base stain or clean wood sealer and allow adequate time to dry. After stenciling, wait 2-3 days and apply waterbase varnish to finish. Test a small section before applying the finish coat. Choose waterbase finishes; oil-base polyurethane can yellow the surface.
For pre-finished paneling: Wash to remove wax or dirt. If applying a glaze for a pickled look, test the color in an inconspicuous place. IF paneling has a glossy finish, paint may not adhere to it. In that case, paint paneling with a bonder/primer such as BIN or KILZ. After stenciling, roll on one or two coats of waterbase varnish for maximum scrubbability. Be sure not to layer water and oil based paints together.
How should I prepare my project surface before painting with Leather Studio™ paints?
All surfaces, new or used should be thoroughly cleaned with soap and water. No need to totally immerse your vinyl or leather surface, simply moisten a cloth with warm water and mild soap; wipe over surface to clean removing all impurities. Allow to dry.
Over time, will Leather Studio™ paint crack or peel?
Leather Studio™ paint is very flexible and will bend, however, it is a product that is being applied over a flexible surface. In surface areas where a lot of flexing occurs, the leather or vinyl may begin to crack.
If this occurs simply bend back the cracking area and fill in with desired color of paint.
What if my project surface has a waxy, highly-polished finish or polish build-up?
Some items may have a waxy finish or perhaps a surface ready to be upcycled may have a shoe polish build-up.
It is best to prepare these surfaces before painting with Leather Studio paints. Sanding the surface lightly with fine grit sandpaper will provide better adhesion for Leather Studio paints. Wipe sanded surface with a damp cloth to remove sanding residue. Another helpful hint when working with highly-polished finishes is to wipe the surface with a cotton swab damped with window cleaner; allow to dry.
How do you adjust the design repeat of a stencil for the corner of a room?
To adjust a stencil design to fit the corners of your room, on one wall you might need to stretch and on the other to squeeze the design. Try to stretch or squeeze the motif when stenciling the final corner where the design is to meet. If that's not practical, another option is to add a less dominant design motif, such as an acorn, a leaf, or a twig, in the final corner to finish the design.
To stretch the design: To ease the design into the corner so a major design element fits on the adjoining wall, stretch the last 304 repeats by increasing the space between design elements 1/2" to 1" per repeat.
Squeezing the design: Decrease the spacing between design elements 1/4" to 1/2" so that the design element that would have gone into the corner is pulled back on the wall before the corner.
What is Leather Studio™ paint?
Leather Studio™ is an acrylic-based craft paint that is designed to add color and design to most leather or vinyl surfaces.
When applied to these surfaces, Leather Studio paint creates a strong, yet flexible film.
How do you clean and store a stencil so it can be used in the future?
After cleaning with water or Murphy's Oil soap, store stencils flat in the package they came in or in large envelopes or file folders. Tape a copy of a paper proof to the package, envelope or folder for easy identification.
What recommendations are there when selecting Leather Studio™ paint colors?
All colors of Leather Studio™ paint are developed to cover any surface color. Most paint colors will cover in one to two applications.
A helpful hint: light paint colors work best over light surfaces; and dark paint colors over dark surfaces. When painting a light color over a dark surface, it is recommended to first basecoat with white paint for best results.
