How to Prepare a Wood Surface for a Project: Sanding & Basecoating

How to Prepare Wood for a Craft Project

Five Easy Steps to Prepare a Wood Surface for a Craft Project

  1. Start by sanding your surface with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth any rough edges.
  2. Wipe down the sanded surface with a moistened towel to remove any dust or debris.
  3. If desired, base coat the surface, painting in the same direction as the wood grain; allow to dry.
  4. Using light pressure, sand the surface again to smooth any remaining rough areas of the surface.
  5. Apply a second base coat and allow to dry.

Sanding Tips

  • Sandpaper that is too coase may mar or scratch your surface. Grit is measured by how coarse or fine the material is—the higher the grit, the smoother the sandpaper; a lower number means the sandpaper is more coarse. The grit number is usually identified on the back-side of the paper and is always identified on the packaging.
  • Never sand against the grain. Always sand in the same direction as the wood grain. Sanding against the grain may scratch the surface and look unappealing on your finished piece.
  • Hold the sandpaper or sanding block flat against the surface and apply even pressure.
  • Always start sanding with light pressure. You can apply more pressure as needed.
  • When sanding is complete, wipe your surface with a moistened paper towel or tack rag to remove sanding dust.
  • Remember to always sand with caution. While sanding a wood surface, tiny particles of wood and sandpaper may fly into the air that can be inhaled or ingested. You may wish to wear a pair of safety goggles and/or a mask for your protection.

Basecoating Tips

  • Paint in the same direction as the wood grain.
  • Clean your paintbrush between coats.
  • Allow the surface to dry completely between coats.
