Getting Started: DIY Banner Essentials

Ready to paint your own custom banner? A little prep goes a long way. With the right supplies on hand, creating a DIY banner becomes fun and much more successful.

Step 1

First up: kraft paper. Kraft paper is a favorite among banner painters because it’s durable, affordable, and easy to cut. It holds paint without tearing and gives banners that classic, handmade look everyone loves. You can find kraft paper rolls at places like Home Depot, Dollar Tree, or Hobby Lobby, making it easy to grab what you need.

Step 2

Now that you have your paper, it is time to decide how big your banner will be. A ruler or measuring tape helps you measure the desired length and keeps the design centered. Light guide marks across the banner can also help plan spacing so lettering and shapes stay balanced from one end to the other.

Step 3

Keep your banner painting from drifting by working on a smooth surface. Blue painter’s tape is the perfect tool for this. It helps secure the kraft paper to a wall, table, or board so it stays in place while you paint. It’s also great for creating crisp borders and straight lines, so your banner design stays nice and even from start to finish.

Step 4

Before the paint comes out, take a moment to sketch out your design. Using a pencil or chalk helps map out letters and shapes so you can tweak spacing and avoid mistakes before painting. Some banner painters use chalk rubbing to copy printed letters. Others use stencils or a projector to trace their phrase.

Step 5

When it’s time to paint, grab the FolkArt Banner Painting Kit. The kit includes FolkArt acrylic paints that deliver bold color on kraft paper along with brushes for filling large areas, painting lettering, and adding small details. Because FolkArt paint is highly pigmented, it does not require a base coat and shows up bright and vibrant on kraft paper.

For smooth results, apply paint in thin layers and let each dry before adding more. This helps prevent warping because no one likes wrinkles.

And You're Ready!

Grab your paint, roll out the paper, and bring your celebration to life with a banner made by you!

Baby on the Way, Banner on Display

Celebrate the little one on the way with a handmade baby shower banner that brings a sweet, personal touch to the decorations. Soft pinks, baby blues, or gentle neutrals create a design that feels joyful and full of love. Display it above the gift table or near the desserts where guests gather. A DIY banner adds warmth to the celebration and makes the shower feel even more special.

A Banner for the Bride-to-Be

Bachelorette party planning gets a lot more fun when the bridesmaids turn it into a creative night together. Spread out the paints, pick bold colors, and start designing a banner for the bride-to-be. Use a projector to outline a funny phrase or inside joke only your group would understand, then fill it in with playful lettering, glitter, or photos. By the time the banner is finished, the laughs are flowing and the party spirit has already begun.

Cake, Candles, and a Birthday Banner

Birthday parties are the perfect excuse to go all out. A DIY banner lets you bring color, creativity, and personality to the party. Think bright paints, bold lettering, photos, and fun details that match the vibe. When everything comes together, the banner becomes one of those decorations that instantly make the celebration feel bigger, louder, and more fun.

A Banner Made for the Grad

After years of studying, late nights, and hard work, graduation day finally arrives. A banner celebrating the Class of 2026 instantly brings excitement to the party. With bold colors, big lettering, and the graduate’s name or year front and center, it becomes a standout piece that highlights the achievement and marks a milestone worth celebrating.

Create Custom Colors for Banner Painting

Ever spent way too long in the store trying to find the perfect shade of paint for your DIY projects? Well, here’s the good news. You can create your own color palette right at home with color mixing.

Banner Painting Mistake Hacks

Mistakes happen. Sometimes paint drips, lines get a little crooked, or a brushstroke looks dry and chalky. The good news is that most banner painting mistakes are easy to fix with a few simple banner painting hacks. Even better, many of the tools you need are already in your home.

If you notice a paint run or small spill, let the paint dry first. Then grab a pencil eraser and gently scrub the area.

Painter’s tape can also save the day. Press the tape onto the dried paint, then lift it away to remove any unwanted paint.

For thicker paint errors, lightly scrape the area with a nail file or an X-acto knife. Use a gentle hand while removing the paint.

If erasing does not fully remove pencil marks, match the kraft paper's color with Apple Barrel craft paint in Light Tan.

If you mispell a word, paint over the mistake with the matching color. Let it dry, then repaint the word or name correctly.

To fix a wrinkled banner, place a towel over it and iron it on a low heat setting. Then your banner will look good as new!

If your paint strokes look streaky, dip the brush back into the craft paint and let it glide across the paper.

Slightly curve the end of each brushstroke to prevent that chalky look and keeps the color looking smooth and fully pigmented.
