5 Fabulous DIY Rock Salt Crystals Projects

In the latest installment of "Fun With Mod Podge," Anna and Suzanne show you how you can make beautiful crystals with just Mod Podge Gloss, Glitter, and Rock Salt! We love this non-toxic alternative to growing crystals by using Borax. Mod Podge Rock Salt Crystals

SUPPLIES:

  • Mod Podge® Gloss, CS11201
  • Mod Podge® Silicone Mat, 6289
  • Rock Salt
  • Ultrafine Glitter
  • Craft Sticks
  • ½ Tablespoon
  • ¼ Measuring Cup
  • Paper Bowl

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Pour ½ tablespoon of Mod Podge® Gloss into a paper bowl.
  2. Add ½ tablespoon + of ultrafine glitter.
  3. Mix the glitter in the gloss with a craft stick.
  4. Add ¼ cup of rock salt and mix with the craft stick until completely coated. If the mixture appears runny, add more rock salt.
  5. Using a craft stick, scoop mounds of the rock salt onto the silicone mat to dry. Spread out single rocks as well.
  6. Let dry overnight.
  7. When the mounds and pieces are no longer milky white from the glue, lift off the mat and flip over and allow to dry until the milky white areas are completely clear.
  8. Optional: Glue two similar sized mounds’ flat sides to each other with Gloss and apply stencil tape around them to hold until the new rock is completely dry.

Mod Podge Rock Salt Crystal Jewelry

SUPPLIES:

  • Mod Podge® Gloss, CS11201
  • Mod Podge® 10 Piece Podgeable Metal Blanks
  • Mod Podge® Silicone Mat, 6289
  • Rock Salt
  • Ultrafine Glitter in Gold, Blue, Purple, Green
  • Craft Sticks
  • ½ Tablespoon
  • ¼ Measuring Cup
  • Paper Bowls
  • Earring hooks, Jump Rings, Chains
  • Jewelry Pliers
  • Water Basin, Paper Towels

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Pour ½ tablespoon of Mod Podge® Gloss into a paper bowl.
  2. Add ½ tablespoon + of ultrafine glitter.
  3. Mix the glitter in the gloss with a craft stick.
  4. Add ¼ cup of rock salt and mix with the craft stick until completely coated. If the mixture appears runny, add more rock salt.
  5. Using a craft stick, scoop a mound of the rock salt onto the flat metal blanks. For rings, scoop a mound onto the silicone mat to dry overnight.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 for each glitter color.
  7. For an ombre effect, sprinkle a little glitter over one edge of a drying mound.
  8. When the ring mounds dry, peel off the silicone mat and attach to the ring base with the Gloss. Let dry completely.
  9. Attach jewelry findings to create necklace and earrings.

**Note: The crystals will appear milky white but will dry completely clear.**

Mod Podge Rock Salt Crystal Bottle Necklaces

SUPPLIES:

  • Mod Podge® Gloss, CS11201
  • Mod Podge® Silicone Mat, 6289
  • Rock Salt
  • Ultrafine Glitter in Variety of Colors
  • ½ Tablespoon
  • ¼ Measuring Cup
  • Paper Bowl
  • Craft Sticks
  • Small Bottles with Eyehooks Attached
  • Silver Cording
  • White Paper
  • Scissors
  • Small Hole Punch
  • Fine Marker

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Pour ½ tablespoon of Mod Podge® Gloss into a paper bowl.
  2. Add ½ tablespoon + of ultrafine glitter.
  3. Mix the glitter with the gloss with a craft stick.
  4. Add ¼ cup of rock salt and mix with the craft stick until completely coated. If the mixture appears runny, add more rock salt.
  5. Using a craft stick, scoop rock salt onto the silicone mat to dry. Spread out single rocks.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 for each glitter color.
  7. Let dry overnight.
  8. When pieces are no longer milky white from the glue, lift off the mat and flip over and allow to dry until the milky white areas are completely clear.
  9. Add the crystals to the bottles and seal.
  10. Cut a small tag and hole punch. Write a word to represent the different crystal colors.
  11. Cut a 24” piece of silver cording, fold in half and push the loop end through the eyehook and tag. Insert the two cording ends through the loop and pull secure. Knot the ends.

Mod Podge Rock Salt Faux Geodes

SUPPLIES:

  • Mod Podge® Gloss, CS11201
  • Plaid® Liquid Leaf, Brass 6150
  • Rock Salt
  • Ultrafine Glitter in Iridescent White, Turquoise Blue
  • Small Plastic Dessert Bowl
  • Craft Sticks
  • 1 teaspoon, 1 Tablespoon
  • ¼, ½  Measuring Cups
  • Wax Paper
  • Paper Bowls
  • Water Basin, Paper Towels

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Line the small plastic bowl with wax paper. Set aside.
  2. Pour 1 tablespoon of Mod Podge® Gloss into a paper bowl.
  3. Add 1 tablespoon + of ultrafine White glitter.
  4. Mix the glitter with the gloss with a craft stick.
  5. Add ½ cup of rock salt and mix with the craft stick until completely coated. If the mixture appears runny, add more rock salt.
  6. Pour mixture in lined plastic bowl. Press into irregular bowl shape using a piece of wax paper to keep from sticking to your hand.
  7. In another paper bowl, pour 1 teaspoon of Mod Podge® Gloss.
  8. Add 1 teaspoon + of ultrafine Turquoise glitter.
  9. Mix the glitter with the gloss with a craft stick.
  10. Add ¼ cup of rock salt and mix with the craft stick until completely coated. If the mixture appears runny, add more rock salt.
  11. Using a craft stick, scoop the Turquoise rocks and press on top of the White rock salt mixture.
  12. Let for at least 3 days. The milky white crystals will dry completely clear.
  13. When completely dry, paint the outside surface with Liquid Leaf. Let dry.
**Note: The faux geode will be pliable until it completely cures in 7 days.**

Mod Podge Rock Salt Initial Letter

SUPPLIES:

  • Mod Podge® Gloss, CS11201
  • Wooden Letter
  • FolkArt® Premium Acrylic Paint, Sterling Silver K662
  • Rock Salt
  • Ultrafine Glitter in Pink
  • Craft Sticks
  • 1 Tablespoon
  • 1 Measuring Cup
  • Paper Bowls
  • Sand Paper
  • Water Basin, Paper Towels

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Sand the wooden letter smooth and wipe clean of debris.
  2. Paint the letter with two coats of Silver letting the coats dry in between.
  3. Set letter aside to dry.
  4. Pour 2 tablespoon of Mod Podge® Gloss into a paper bowl.
  5. Add 2 tablespoons + of ultrafine glitter.
  6. Mix the glitter in the gloss with a craft stick.
  7. Add 1 cup of rock salt and mix with the craft stick until completely coated. If the mixture appears runny, add more rock salt.
  8. Coat the top surface of the letter with Gloss.
  9. While it is still wet, scoop the rock salt onto the surface with a craft stick.
  10. Let dry flat overnight.
**Note: The crystals will appear milky white but will dry completely clear.**
