Is there anything special that needs to be done to the painted surface before using it as a chalkboard?

The surface should be “conditioned” before use. To condition the surface, wait 24 hours (recommended cure time) after the last coat of paint. Lay a piece of chalk on its side and rub on surface side to side. Dampen a paper towel with water and wipe the surface to remove chalk dust.
