While dying eggs is clearly an Easter tradition, any and everyone is welcome to join in on the fun of coloring eggs by following the detailed steps provided. Before we dive into the steps necessary to create vibrant tie dye Easter eggs, let's first take a short history lesson on how this holiday tradition came to be!
Many Christians give up something for the Lent season—Lent begins on the Monday of the seventh week before Easter and ends the Friday nine days before Easter Sunday. While nowadays many folks give up bad habits, snack foods, and certain foods, back in the day, eggs were considered a forbidden food during the 40-day Lent period. The egg decorating tradition initially began as a way for Christians to mark the end of their yearly period of fasting from particular foods. In addition to eggs, many Christians refrain from eating meat on all Fridays during the Lent season. It’s said that Mesoptamian Christian’s would dye their eggs red to symbolize the blood that Jesus Christ shed. While nowadays decorating eggs has changed drastically, it’s important to note what started this beloved Easter tradition. Now, let’s dive into the steps of how to tie dye eggs using alcohol-based markers!

EGG PATTERN 1
Step 1
To get started, grab all the supplies you need (listed above). Put on your gloves if you have a pair handy, this will make it so your hands aren’t covered in marker ink after coloring your eggs. Be sure to have plenty of paper towels and rubber bands handy as they are essential for this craft project. Start by placing your first egg on a paper towel. It should be noted, eggs should be hard-cooked and chilled prior to starting, you don’t want to work with fresh (uncooked) eggs as they are delicate and could break in your hands.
Step 2
Next, begin to wrap your egg in said paper towel, make sure it's a tight enough hold so your egg stays in place. Then, add a rubber band to hold the paper towel in place.
Step 3
Now the fun begins! Time to add color to your Easter eggs. Begin with a lighter shade, here we used a yellow colored marker first. Next, follow that up with a slightly darker shade, like an orange. The key is to choose colors that are close enough in color to create a gradient that will look similar to tie dye. When you’re adding your marker to the paper towel surface, try to add some variation in the brush stroke; this will also assist in creating a tie dye pattern.
Step 4
Continue this pattern of adding slightly darker colors, here we used an orange-red shade. Be sure to use the brush tip to continue creating the desired tie dye pattern. Take your time with this, there’s no rush in creating Easter eggs—enjoy the creative process!

Next, add the colors pink, blue, then a darker shade of blue.
Step 6
To create a tie dye effect on your egg, go ahead and spray it with water. Get a few spritz in making sure to spray the entire surface area once. This is when it becomes abundantly clear why we advise you to wear a pair of gloves while crafting.
Step 7
Next, roll your egg side to side in your hand to truly blend each color together seamlessly.
Step 8
Remove the rubber band from your paper towel once you feel satisfied with the blending of your colors.
