You can supplement a different color of same yarn type (i.e. pink acrylic yarn for a brown acrylic yarn), but if you are wanting to use a different yarn material type the same pattern will not be applicable due to weight and thickness causing different stitch sizes (i.e. supplementing an acrylic yarn for a t-shirt yarn).
