Make your own textured dimensional art with this simple FolkArt Super Thick paint tutorial. Using basic supplies and ornate frames, you'll create unique wall art featuring whimsical scenes with depth and dimension.
Instructions
- Remove glass and backing from all frames. Paint frames with Treasure Gold. Let dry.
- Cut thick cardstock to fit inside each frame. These will be your canvas bases.
Scene 1 - Ocean Aquarium
- Using the palette knife, apply Deep Blue Super Thick paint thickly across the cardstock, creating waves and texture. While wet, blend in touches of Medium Blue for depth and dimension. Let dry completely.
- Cut out printed images of tropical fish and two people viewing them. Trim carefully around edges.
- Apply Mod Podge to the backs of your fish cutouts. Place them at varying depths on the textured blue background. Refer to the photo for placement. Apply fish at slight angles for dimension. Add the two people at the bottom. Seal all elements with Mod Podge on top. Let dry.
Scene 2 - Snowy Ski Slope
- Apply White Super Thick paint to a second cardstock using the palette knife. Create rolling hills and texture for snow. Build up thick areas for dimensional snowdrifts. Let dry.
- Cut out printed images of skiers, snowboarders, trees, and a dog. Trim carefully.
- Using hot glue, attach cutouts to the snowy background at varying heights for 3D effect. Start with background trees, then add skiers and figures. Refer to the photo for placement. The hot glue adds extra dimension beneath the figures.
- For pine trees, either use printed cutouts or dab small amounts of Leafy Green Super Thick paint with the palette knife to create simple tree shapes.
Scene 3 - Pastoral Sheep Field
- Apply Leafy Green Super Thick paint to the third cardstock using the palette knife. Create textured grass with upward strokes. Let dry.
- Cut out sheep and tree images. Use hot glue to attach elements, creating depth. Place sheep at different levels. Refer to the photo for placement.
- Once all scenes are completely dry, place each cardstock artwork into its gilded frame and secure with backing.
