Metallic Color Shift Planter

Transform a basic planter with a simple texture into metallic home decor with this simple DIY tutorial using FolkArt Color Shift paint.

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Planter: Clean your planter thoroughly with soap and water to remove any dust, dirt, or oils. Dry completely. If using a terracotta planter, you may want to apply a base coat of white acrylic paint first for better color coverage, though this is optional.
  2. Apply Base Coat: Using a flat brush from the Plaid® Brush Set (44219), apply a smooth, even base coat of FolkArt Color Shift 5456 Silver Flash to the entire exterior of the planter. Apply in long, even strokes, working from top to bottom. Tip: The Color Shift paint has a beautiful iridescent quality that shifts between silver and subtle purple/pink tones depending on the angle of light.
  3. Allow the base coat to dry completely (approximately 1-2 hours). Apply a second coat if needed for full coverage. Let dry completely before moving to the next step.
  4. Final Drying and Sealing: Allow the completed planter to dry for 24 hours before use. If you plan to use the planter outdoors or want extra durability, spray with a clear acrylic sealer once fully dry.
  5. Add Your Plant: Once completely dry, add your favorite plant! The silvery, color-shifting finish pairs beautifully with greenery and creates a modern, elevated look for any space.

Pro Tip: The Color Shift formula creates a gorgeous iridescent effect that changes in different lighting—place your finished planter where it will catch natural light!
