Design Overview:

The journal features three distinct painted sections stacked horizontally:

  • Top section: Lime green with textured brushstrokes
  • Middle section: Bright turquoise blue with painted details
  • Bottom section: Cream/natural with navy blue abstract spots

Instructions:

Step 1: Plan Your Design

  1. Decide on 3 horizontal color-blocked sections
  2. Lightly sketch dividing lines with pencil if needed
  3. Top section will be approximately 1/3 of cover
  4. Middle section approximately 1/3
  5. Bottom section remaining 1/3

Step 2: Paint Top Section (Lime Green)

  1. Using flat brush, paint top third of journal with lime green
  2. Apply 2 coats for solid coverage, drying between coats
  3. While slightly wet, add texture with quick brush strokes
  4. Dab or scrape with brush edge for added dimension
  5. Let dry completely

Step 3: Paint Middle Section (Turquoise)

  1. Paint middle third with bright turquoise blue
  2. Apply 2 coats for even coverage
  3. Once dry, add accent marks with detail brush
  4. Paint small vertical lines or dashes in contrasting colors
  5. Add navy blue or dark details for depth

  7. Let dry completely

Step 4: Paint Bottom Section (Spotted Pattern)

  1. Leave bottom section natural/cream or paint light base color
  2. Using detail brush, paint abstract organic spots
  3. Use navy blue or dark teal for spots
  4. Vary spot sizes from small dots to larger blobs
  5. Distribute spots randomly across bottom third
  6. Add some connecting shapes or irregular ovals
  7. Refer to the photo for organic spot pattern
  8. Let dry completely

Step 5: Add Details & Texture

  1. Go back over all sections with detail brush
  2. Add small accent marks, lines, or dashes where desired
  3. Paint thin lines at section borders if wanted
  4. Add tiny dots or stippling for extra texture
  5. Layer colors for more visual interest
  6. Keep it loose and abstract—no rules!

Step 6: Finishing Touches

  1. Let entire journal dry 24 hours
  2. Optional: spray with clear acrylic sealer for protection
  3. Apply 2-3 light coats of sealer, drying between coats
  4. Let cure completely before using

Alternative Design Ideas

Pattern Options:

  • Dots only (polka dot effect)
  • All brushstrokes (abstract expressionist)
  • Waves or curves between sections
  • Geometric shapes scattered throughout

Texture Techniques:

  • Sponge daubing for rough texture
  • Dry brush for streaky effect
