Meet the Plaid Creators: Liz Welker and Sam Spendlove of "Pretty Life Girls"

Meet the Plaid Creators: Liz Welker and Sam Spendlove of "Pretty Life Girls"

It's time for our final Plaid Creators instagram takeover of 2016! Last but certainly not least, we are excited to introduce sisters Liz Welker and Sam Spendlove of the "The Pretty Life Girls!" Follow our Instagram Channel (@plaidcrafts) to see their lovely instagram takeover throughout the day, and check out their exclusive interview below about where they draw inspiration, how they collaborate long distance, and what DIY means to them!

When did you first start getting into DIY and crafting?

After we both got married and were students living in the same small town on a tight budget we both started getting into DIY to decorate our homes. We would collaborate with each other on ideas to spruce up a space, and we haven’t stopped since!

Who inspired you to start crafting?

Our mom! She really crafty and creative and always has supplies on hand to make a handmade card or gift.

What was the most memorable craft/project you ever created?

Sam: I stitched a pillow for my son’s nursery while I was pregnant with him that said “You are my sunshine” on it. My mom used to sing that song to me when I was little so it meant a lot to me. I still love seeing that pillow in his nursery.
Liz: Just this year I made a dollhouse for my daughter that would have been the dollhouse of my dreams when I was her age. Watching her play with it makes me the happiest.

Did you do arts and crafts as a child? If yes, who did you do them with?

We did! Our mom always had lots of craft supplies around the house and the three of us would scrapbook, make cards, and work on projects together.  Even today, one of our favorite things to do when we are together with our mom is go to a craft supply store and wander the aisles.

Why is crafting worthwhile, to you?

For us it is a creative outlet that has helped to enrich our lives and grow closer. Crafting can make your home more beautiful, it can make a gift more meaningful, and it is a way to express yourself that in a fulfilling way.

What is your favorite aspect of crafting and creating?
Our blog is unique in that is collaborative, and as a result, our favorite aspect of crafting and creating is collaboration! We can spend hours talking about projects, looking at supplies, and dreaming up ideas. Crafting has given us such a unique way to bond and work together, and that means a lot to us.

Where do you find your inspiration?

We find our inspiration through other bloggers, artists and designers, and through each other. We both have a different style and approach to crafting and it is a big inspiration to watch the other work on projects. It helps us see things differently and learn from each other.

Any advice to those just starting to get into crafting?

Don’t be afraid to have LOTS of fails. It seems like for every project that turns out great, we have several epic fails. And while that can be frustrating, we have learned that we can’t let it stop us from trying again, or from tackling that one big project that seems out of reach.

What are 3 craft supplies/tools that you can't live without?

Mod Podge, glue gun, and a paper trimmer.

What's something you have yet to create, that you dream of creating/crafting some day?

Sam: I would love to learn hand-lettered calligraphy and use it in all of my crafting.
Liz: I have big dreams of creating beautiful scrapbooks from all of the pictures I have on a million SD cards of my children. Maybe it’ll happen once they are grown up and moved away!
