Other Supplies

  • Three stretched artist canvases – 16” x 20”
  • Three starfish approximately 3.5” x 5”
  • Variety of small shells
  • Hot glue gun
  • Tracing paper, Pencil, Graphite transfer paper
  • Paper towel, Water basin, Palette or Styrofoam plate

Instructions

Background

  • The background of each canvas is painted with an ombré effect using Wedding Cake, Beach Glass, and Emerald City. Double-load the utility brush by dipping one corner of the bristles in Emerald City and the other corner into Beach Glass. The Emerald City color is at the very top of the canvas and working down, blend the colors to create various shades from dark to light. Clean brush and double-load with Wedding Cake and Beach Glass. Again, apply to canvas, sweeping across and reloading brush as needed until the canvas is covered. Be sure to also paint each side of the canvas. Let dry.

“Mermaid Kisses” Canvas

  1. You can either paint the lettering freehand, or print the provided pattern, enlarge as needed, and transfer to canvas using graphite paper and pencil. Using Indigo paint and the # 12 round brush from the large brush set, paint phrase. Let dry.
  2. Highlight phrase with Lapis Lazuli. Let dry.

Starfish Canvas

  1. Secure mermaid scales stencil to the canvas with stencil tape, starting at the upper left hand corner.
  2. Using the 3/8” stencil brush stencil the mermaid scales onto canvas, refer to photo for color placement, graduating each color and gradually blending from one color to the other. Lightly stencil letting some of the background color show through. Begin with Beach Glass, clean brush and add Pond. Repeat for Peacock Feather. Let dry.
    • Optional: randomly brush Lapis Lazuli over canvas with the utility brush for highlights.
  3. Adhere the starfish and seashells to canvas with hot glue gun.

Mermaid Tail Canvas

  1. You can either paint the lettering freehand, or print the pattern provided, enlarge as needed, and transfer to canvas using graphite paper and pencil.
  2. Paint lettering with the #4 round brush and Pond.
  3. Basecoat tail with Peacock Feather, and then dry-brush edge of tail with Pond as well as the center area of the tail fins. Let dry.
  4. Create scales by double loading the ½” flat brush from the large brush set with Peacock Feather and Beach Glass. Paint a stroke in the shape of a “U” with the Pond color placed at the base of the U shape. Change colors near the bottom third of the tail, clean brush, and double-load with Pond and Beach Glass. Let dry.
  5. Add accent lines to tail fin with the #1 round brush from the detail brush set in Beach Glass paint. Let dry.
  6. Highlight the tail with Lapis Lazuli. Let dry.
