Other Supplies

Large glass canning jar, Brush basin or container for water, Paper towels, Foam plate for palette, 3/4” Flat brush, No. 12 flat brush, No. 1 liner brush, Tracing paper, White chalk, Old toothbrush, Fine grit sandpaper, Small wood knob, Black organza ribbon, White craft glue

Instructions

  1. Wash glass canning jar in warm soapy water, rinse well and thoroughly dry.
  2. Moisten paper towel with rubbing alcohol and wipe entire surface of the glass to remove any remaining grease, dirt or soap film. Allow to dry.
  3. Load a wide flat brush with FolkArt Home Decor Chalk Turkish Tile and smoothly apply paint to exterior of glass caning jar. Allow to dry. (Color shown here is Grotto which was used on painted pear jar.)
  4. Set wet jar aside and allow to dry 2 hours prior to distressing.
  5. Sand painted jar using fine grit sandpaper to create a distressed, time-worn look.
  6. The next step is to trace and transfer the background shape of the apple, (a circle). Trace apple pattern onto tracing paper; flip traced pattern over and apply white chalk to the pattern lines. Flip tracing paper over once more, position (chalk side down) on prepared jar and retrace circle shape.
  7. Load large flat brush with Soft Apple and neatly basecoat the circle shape. Allow to dry. If necessary, reapply to create an opaque background.
Once dry, reposition traced pattern back over painted circle; transfer apple, stem and leaf pattern.
  8. Colorbook paint apple – Engine Red, stem – Bark Brown, and leaf – Thicket. Allow to dry and reapply to create opaque coverage.
  9. Load large flat brush with Blending Gel; lightly paint Blending Gel at base of leaf.
  10. Shade base of leaf by sideloading large flat brush with Ink Spot; apply paint at base of leaf.
  11. Apply Blending Gel to remaining area of leaf.
  12. Load flat brush with Fresh Foliage and paint highlights to leaf. Using the chisel edge of the brush, touch the leaf edge, apply pressure, pull and lift quickly allowing the Fresh Foliage to lightly blend into the darker areas of the leaf.
  13. To shade the left side of the apple, load large flat brush with Blending Gel.
  14. Sideload brush with Berry Wine. Keeping the Berry Wine to the outside edge of the apple, pull the brush following the apple’s shape.
  15. To highlight the right side of the apple, load large flat brush with Blending Gel.
  16. Sideload brush with Vivid Orange and repeat the same stroke following the shape of the apple. Note: You may find it easier to paint the same large “c” or curve stroke by flipping your work around.
  17. To create the “smile” of the apple, sideload a smaller flat brush with Berry Wine and paint the smile keeping the Berry Wine side of the brush towards the bottom of the apple.
  18. Shade the base of the Bark Brown stem with a touch of Licorice.
  19. Add a Daffodil Yellow highlight on the right side of the apple just under the smile.
  20. Load a large flat brush with Blending Gel.
  21. Sideload the brush with Bark Brown and paint a shadow keeping Bark Brown side the brush closest to the apple.
  22. Embellish your painted apple by “flyspecking” or splattering Bark Brown. To flyspeck: thin Bark Brown with a small amount of water to an ink-like consistency. Load an old toothbrush with thinned paint. Holding the brush with the bristles toward your artwork, run your thumb over bristles and watch the tiny flecks of color fly over your surface!
  23. Lastly, paint a Licorice brush stroke trim around the background shape. Load a No. 1 Liner brush with thinned Licorice; thin with water to an ink-like consistency. Paint a simple comma stroke border. If desired, paint a comma stroke border on the jar lid too.
  24. Complete the jar by painting a small wood knob Licorice. When dry, glue knob to jar lid and tie a black organza ribbon around jar lid.
