Instructions

Starfish Pillow

  1. Place poster board under fabric to protect surface and stabilize the fabric.
  2. Secure stencils to front of pillow cover with stencil tape.
  3. For the large starfish pillow, stencil the starfish using the ½” slightly left of center of the pillow front, referring to photo for placement. Start at the edge of the stencil with Wedding Cake and gradually blending in porcelain doll and then add Sandcastle. Clean and reload brush for each color. Stencil lightly, letting colors fade into the fabric background. Let dry.
  4. Embellish the starfish using 6 strands of floss and create Back stitch details along the inside star shape. Randomly scatter French Knots using 6 strands of ecru. Outline the entire starfish shape using 6 strands and Chain stitch, placed approximately ¼”-⅜“ around the starfish design.

Sand Dollar & Scallop Pillow

  1. Repeat steps 1 & 2 as above.
  2. Stencil the motifs using the ⅜” stencil brush onto the pillow, referring to photo for placement. Start at the edge of the stencil with Wedding Cake and gradually blend in Porcelain Doll and then add Sandcastle. Clean and reload brush for each color. Stencil lightly letting colors fade into the fabric background. Let dry.
  3. Embellish the sand dollar using 3 strands of floss and create the Running stitch details along the inside of each oval detail on the center of the motif. Outline the outside of this motif detail with 3 strands and the Stem stitch. Embellish the outline of the entire sand dollar edge first embroidering the inner edge with 3 strands for a Running stitch approximately ⅛” of the stenciled outline. The entire sand dollar is then outlined with 3 strands for the Stem stitch.
  4. Embellish the Scallop Shell using the scallop motif as your guide. Using 4 strands of floss, create a long Back stitch along every other space of the shell ribs. At base of shell ridges use 3 strands for a Running stitch. Add the detail of 3 strands for a Stem stitch approximately ¼“ from the Running stitch (see photo for shell hinge). The entire scallop motif is outlined with 3 strands for the Stem stitch place approximately ⅛” from the stenciled edge.
  5. The small scallop is embroidered using 3 strands for the Running stitch along the ribs. The entire scallop shape is outlined with 3 strands for a Back stitch.
  6. The small starfish is accented with French knots using 3 strands. A Running stitch using 2 strands of floss accents each leg of the starfish.
