Other Supplies

Sliced wood board 11"L x 7"W, Six (6) 1.5" Sliced Wood Rounds, Jute Cording, 5" x 5" image of grass, Three (3) – Butterfly images to fit 1.5" diameter, Three (3) – Beetle images to fit 1.5" diameter, Fine-tip black permanent marker, Scissors, Ruler, Paper cup, Small paint brush, Small 4" diameter bowl, Cling wrap (to cover bowl), Water basin, Paper towels

Instructions

  1. Cut out each butterfly and beetle. Do not worry about cutting off the legs and antennae. Glue one bug to each of the six wood slices with the Mod Podge. Let dry.
  2. When dry, draw legs and antennae on each bug. Let dry. Apply a top coat of Mod Podge over the entire surface. Let dry.
  3. With Super Glow, apply a generous coat over each butterfly and beetle body. Set aside to dry.
  4. Turn the image of the grass over. Divide into six equal squares. Trim out each square with a jagged edge to resemble "grass".
  5. Lay the grass squares on one end of the board leaving space in between each square. Glue in place with Mod Podge. Apply a top coat of Mod Podge over the entire surface. Let dry.
  6. After drying, paint generous lines of Super Glow between the squares to create a grid. See project example.
  7. To create the jute bowl to hold the playing pieces: Turn your small bowl over and cover with cling wrap and secure in place underneath the bowl. Cut two yards of jute and place in a paper cup. Pour Mod Podge Stiffy into the paper cup to coat the jute cording.
  8. Starting at the center bottom of the covered bowl, begin coiling the jute around very tightly to itself. Let the jute come straight out of the glue filled cup. Press the jute together as you go. Coil around until you complete the bowl shape. Make sure the jute is covered with the Stiffy. Trim off the end. Let dry 24 hours.
  9. After 24 hours, remove the cling wrap from the bowl mold and then remove from your Stiffy bowl.
  10. "Charge" your butterflies, beetle and board under bright light or sunlight. Then turn out the lights and play a glowing game of tic-tac-toe!
