Distressed Entryway Organizer
Upcycle a thrift-store find into a beautiful, functional entryway organizer with FolkArt Home Decor Chalk acrylic paint!

Other Things You'll Need

  • Trellis Stencil
  • Large dining room cabinet
  • Wood filler
  • Petroleum jelly
  • Disposable paintbrush
  • Painter
  • Tape
  • Sandpaper
  • Organizational items: hooks; baskets; etc.

Instructions

  1. Remove doors or shelves from the unit. Fill any holes with wood filler. Once dry, sand and wipe clean.
  2. Paint the middle section of the hutch Patina and the bottom and top trim with Sage Shadow. Allow to dry 2 hours.
  3. Using a foam paintbrush, apply the Crackle Medium to areas where you want the crackle effect. You can brush on or tap on. Allow to fully dry before applying the top-coat.
  4. In areas where you want a heavy distressed look, apply a coat of petroleum jelly. This looks really good along edges or detailed areas.
  5. Using a disposable brush, paint the petroleum jelly areas with Sheepskin FolkArt Home Décor. Using the Wide Brush, paint the crackle medium areas. Be very careful to only paint in one direction over the crackle medium or you will end up painting over the crackled spots. Use the same brush to paint the rest of the unit. Allow to dry.
  6. Using a scraper, scrap the petroleum jelly areas. The top-coat will easily come off creating a distressed look.
  7. Tape the stencil into the lower (seat) area. Load the Chalk Brush with Shade Shadow paint. You will want to work with a dry brush so make sure you wipe most of the paint off the brush. Pouring the paint into a disposable bowl works best for stenciling. Begin in the center of the stencil and swirl the brush over the stencil. Swirl harder in some sections and softer in other section so you get a not-perfect or distressed look. Lift stencil and allow the paint to dry.
  8. Using the wax brush, apply the Antique Wax to the organizer. You will brush on in a circular motion and then wipe with a soft rag.
  9. Attach the organizational items with screws in your desired areas.
  • PROJECT TIP: If you want a “less distressed” organizer, FolkArt Chalk Clear Wax can be substituted for the Antique Wax.
