Mixed Media Cactus Painting

Instructions

  1. To create cactus spikes, cut several pieces of embroidery floss to 2.” Tie the pieces into knots at the centers.
  2. Spray Mod Podge Ultra Matte onto a paper towel to prime the pump, then spray a light coat of the Mod Podge onto the canvas where you want to place the cactus spikes. Only spray a small section to start.
  3. Place the knotted floss onto the sprayed area and use a toothpick to press the knot in place. The knot is the section that should be adhered to the canvas. Tip: While holding the floss in place with the toothpick, you can blow on the area lightly to make the Mod Podge “tackier” more quickly.
  4. Continue this process across the painted cactus area, spraying small sections at a time and applying the floss with a toothpick where desired.
  5. Spray the flower areas of the painting with a generous coating of Mod Podge Ultra Matte. Lay embroidery floss on the canvas mimicking the flowers shapes to create a “nest” sort of shape. Then, place a flower shaped bead in the center of the “nest.”
  6. Spray the entire canvas with a coat of Mod Podge Ultra to seal the painting and stiffen the adhered embroidery floss. Let dry completely before moving or touching the added embellishments.
