Personalizing is so much fun and easy to do when all you need is to select the letters you want to spell out a special word with meaning. I chose “NOEL” for the holiday season. Join me in the studio to paint NOEL with a buffalo plaid “N”, a greenery wreath “O”, a candy cane “E” and a Santa “L!” This is a simple and so fun usng FolkArt Multi-Surface Acrylics.

Other Things You'll Need

  • Brush Basin or container for water
  • Waxed paper palette
  • Paper towels
  • Gray graphite
  • Stylus
  • Ruler
  • Pencil

Instructions

  1. 5” Letter N – Basecoat face of letter with Apple Red.  Paint sides and back of letter with Licorice. Using a straight edge ruler and pencil, measure out ½” vertical and horizontal stripes.  Paint the squares as illustrated solid Licorice.  Alternate with solid red squares and in between, paint squares with thin diagonal stripes.  Shade the striped squares with Licorice on the left and bottom.
  2. 5” Letter O – Basecoat face of the letter with Sap Green.  Paint the sides and back of the letter with Licorice.  Work in layers, paint Classic Green leaves, then Lime Green leaves.  Add berries of Apple Red and highlight the berries with Wicker White.
  3. 5” Letter E – Basecoat the face of the letter with Wicker White.  Paint the sides and back of the letter with Licorice.  Paint the red stripes with Apple Red, shade with a mix of Apple Red plus a touch of Licorice.  Add thin Classic Green stripes between the red stripes.  Shade each peppermint section with a touch of Classic French Gray.  Add a Wicker White glazed highlight on each peppermint section.
  4. 5” Letter L – Paint a slip slap background of Classic Green and Wicker White on the face of the letter.  Add Licorice to the sides and back of the letter.  Transfer the Santa pattern. 
  • Santa Face – Cool Bisque shaded with Pueblo.  Apple Red plus Cool Bisque for cheeks and lip.  Licorice eyes and mouth. Highlight with Wicker White.
  • Hat and Robe – Apple Red shaded with mix of Apple Red plus a touch of Licorice.  Fur is painted Wicker White.  Stripe on the hat is Classic Green.  Jingle Bel is painted Treasure Gold – Gold.
  • Mittens – Classic Green highlighted with a touch of Lime Green.
  • Boots – Licorice with Classic French Gray highlight.  Treasure Gold – Gold buttons.
  • Belt and Buckle – Belt is painted Licorice.  Buckle is Treasure Gold – Gold.
  • Outline Santa body and word “Santa” - thinned Licorice.
  • Greenery and Berries – Classic Green and Lime Green is used for the greenery.  Apple Red is used for the berries.
