It is best to brush a coat of Mod Podge Ultra Matte Chalk onto the project surface as well as evenly over the back of the paper to be decoupaged. Flip the paper over, place it onto the project surface joining glue to glue; and then press to smooth out any wrinkles or captured air pockets using a Mod Podge Brayer or Squeegee. Allow to dry 15 – 20 minutes before applying a topcoat of Mod Podge Ultra Matte Chalk. For a simple and quick finish, apply a smooth, moderate layer of Mod Podge Ultra Matte Chalk to the decoupaged surface.
If desired, a light spray of Mod Podge Acrylic Sealer can be applied as a final topcoat for additional protection. NOTE: Mod Podge Acrylic Sealer will alter the finish of Mod Podge Ultra Matte Chalk.

- Textured Finish – Apply a thick coat imitating an artist's brush strokes or stipple with sponge.
- Built Up Finish – Apply at least five coats of Mod Podge Ultra Matte Chalk, drying 15–20 minutes between coats. Wet sand with 400 lb. grit sandpaper until smooth. Wipe dry. Polish with #0000 fine steel wool. Wipe with damp cloth. If desired, apply additional coats of Mod Podge Ultra Matte Chalk and repeat wet sanding.
