instructions

  1. Paint the entire wood piece with a coat of Vintage White and allow to dry.  Once dry, if necessary, sand smooth.
  2. Pumpkins – paint all three pumpkins in the front with Pure Orange.  Shade each pumpkin with Pueblo and highlight with Moon Yellow.  The pumpkin stems are painted Thicket and highlighted with Thicket plus Moon Yellow.  Once dry, all three are decorated with “Happy” “Fall” and Ya’ll” using a liner brush loaded with thinned Licorice.  Using the same brush and thinned Licorice, paint a dash dot dash design around the edges of each pumpkin.
  3. Scarecrow:
  4. Head – Create a light burlap color by adding a touch of Burnt Umber to Vintage White – paint the face and add a second application if necessary.  Shade the outer edges of the head with a medium brown mixture created with Vintage White plus a touch more Burnt Umber.  The same mixture is used to paint the smile line.  Paint the round cheeks with a mixture of Apple Red plus Burnt Umber.  This same mixture is also used for the band on the scarecrow’s hat.  The eyes are painted Burnt Umber, accent with a touch of the cheek mixture at the top of the eyes.  Add a Licorice pupil and Wicker White highlights.
  5. Hat – Paint the hat with Burnt Umber, highlight with Wicker White plus Burnt Umber and shade with Burnt Umber plus Licorice.  Add a sunflower accent painting the petals Yellow Ochre, the center Burnt Umber accented with the cheek color dots around the flower center.  And add a few Thicket small leaves.
  6. Shirt – Paint the shirt Vintage White and allow to dry.   Add the Apple Red stripes horizontally and when dry, add the stripes vertically.  Allow to dry, then shade the shirt with a medium gray mixture of Wicker White plus Licorice.
  7. Overalls – Paint the scarecrow’s overalls with Look At Me Blue.  Shade with washes of a mixture of Look At Me Blue plus Licorice.
  8. Straw – All straw areas are painted the same with a combination of Yellow Ochre, Pueblo, Burnt Umber, and Wicker White
  9. Crow – Paint the black crow with Licorice.  Highlight the wing section with a light gray mixture created by mixing Wicker White with a touch of Licorice.  Add an eye of the gray mixture highlighted with Wicker White.
  10. Using thinned Licorice loaded on the liner brush, accent the two large pumpkins with the same dash dot dash pattern along the edges.
