Other Supplies

Large glass canning jar, Brush basin or container for water, Paper towels, Foam plate for palette, 3/4” Flat brush, No. 12 flat brush, No. 1 liner brush, Tracing paper, White chalk, Old toothbrush, Fine grit sandpaper, Small wood knob, Black organza ribbon, White craft glue

Instructions

  1. Wash glass canning jar in warm soapy water, rinse well and thoroughly dry.
  2. Moisten paper towel with rubbing alcohol and wipe entire surface of the glass to remove any remaining grease, dirt or soap film. Allow to dry.
  3. Load a wide flat brush with FolkArt Home Decor Chalk Patina and smoothly apply paint to exterior of glass caning jar. Allow to dry. (Color shown here is Grotto which was used on painted pear jar.)
  4. Set wet jar aside and allow to dry 2 hours prior to distressing.
  5. Sand painted jar using fine grit sandpaper to create a distressed, time-worn look.
  6. The next step is to trace and transfer the background shape of the grapes, (an oval). Trace grapes pattern onto tracing paper; flip traced pattern over and apply white chalk to the pattern lines. Flip tracing paper over once more, position (chalk side down) on prepared jar and retrace oval shape.
  7. Load large flat brush with Eggplant and neatly basecoat the oval shape. Allow to dry. If necessary, reapply to create an opaque background.
  8. Reposition traced pattern back over painted oval; transfer grape cluster and leaf pattern.
  9. Colorbook paint grapes – Perfect Purple, and leaf – Thicket. Allow to dry and reapply to create opaque coverage.
  10. Paint leaf with Thicket to 're-wet' leaf.
  11. Load flat brush with Fresh Foliage adding a touch of Titanium White on one side of the brush. Begin highlighting the grape leaf edges keeping Titanium White to the outer edge of the leaf.
  12. Pat to blend the colors together keeping Thicket at the leaf base, blended Thicket and Fresh Foliage on the middle section of the leaf and mostly Titanium White to the edges.
  13. Load a dauber with Perfect Purple and re-wet the grape cluster. Dab the dauber into the puddle of paint, touch the grape cluster, lightly twist and lift dauber creating individual grape circles.
  14. Add Titanium White to one side of the dauber as shown in photo.
  15. Repeat same grape painting process by touching a grape circle, lightly apply pressure, slightly twist and lift.
  16. Continue painting grapes adding touches of Purple as well as Perfect Purple. Continue using Titanium White as the highlight and add small touches of Aqua on a few grapes as an accent.
  17. Upon completing grapes, paint a delicate curlicue to the grape cluster. Thin Fresh Foliage with water to an ink-like consistency. Load liner brush with thinned paint. While keeping brush straight up so that only the tip of the bristles are touching the surface, slowly and smoothly paint a loop de loop creating delicate curlicues.
  18. Lastly, paint a Licorice brush stroke trim around the background shape. Load a No. 1 Liner brush with thinned Licorice; thin with water to an ink-like consistency. Paint a simple comma stroke border. If desired, paint a comma stroke border on the jar lid too.
  19. Complete the jar by painting a small wood knob Licorice. When dry, glue knob to jar lid and tie a black organza ribbon around jar lid.
