Our Go-To Tips and Tricks

  • First and foremost, gather your inspiration. Before and after your thrifting trip, look through Pinterest boards and projects to see what ideas might catch your eye. It helps keep ideas at the front of your mind when looking through the aisles of a thrift store.
  • If you’re just getting started in upcycling thrifted items, start small. Vases, candlesticks, and frames are a great place to begin.
  • Don’t skip the art section! Just because a piece may look finished, doesn’t mean it couldn’t use a personal touch. Add a UFO to a landscape, paint drips to a floral still life, or repaint an abstract background to a city scene.
  • Choose items that you find visually interesting. We’ve all experienced starting a project, losing interest, and then having the item sit on a shelf, waiting for its moment. One of the most important tips is to select an item that makes your eyes sparkle and ignites your excitement to work on it!
  • When you get thrifted items, make sure to give them a good cleaning! This will help get rid of any dirt or residue left behind, making it easier for your modifications to stick.
  • Let your imagination run wild! Items may not serve the same purpose they initially did. For example, jars make great planters, plates and chargers look great as wall décor, and small toy figures can add fun details to a picture frame. There are no limits to your creativity!
  • Use the right tools for the job. Having the right paints and brushes makes a world of difference. Multi-surface paints (paints that work on a variety of materials such as wood, canvas, glass, fabric, ceramics, etc.) and sturdy paintbrushes are essentials in any artist’s kit.
  • Lastly, don't be afraid to make mistakes! The joy of upcycling thrifted pieces lies in creating unique, one-of-a-kind items to reuse and love. Every project offers valuable lessons and can evolve into something greater than you ever imagined!
