FAQs

When using Martha Stewart Crafts ® Glow-in-the-Dark Finish, should I shake the bottle to mix it?
No. Do not shake the bottle. Roll the bottle on a tabletop several times to mix thoroughly.
What is the difference between FolkArt Home Decor Chalk paint and FolkArt Acrylic paint?
FolkArt Acrylic paint is formulated as a premium, artist’s quality acrylic paint with superior hide and smooth, creamy consistency perfect for most art techniques such as brush stroke work, blending and highlighting, or stenciling. FolkArt Acrylic paint will dry to a durable matte sheen.
FolkArt Home Decor Chalk is formulated as high quality paint perfect for painting and distressing furniture and thrift store finds, as well as home Decor accessories. It is a heavily pigmented paint that does not require any project preparation such as priming, sanding or stripping. FolkArt Home Decor Chalk provides the DIY enthusiast an ultra matte chalky finish when dry which is easily sanded to distress using medium grit sandpaper. It will not “gum up” sandpaper making it easy to achieve a time-worn look.

What is the paint cure time when working with FolkArt Home Decor Chalk paint?
FolkArt Home Décor Chalk paint will dry to the touch almost immediately, however it will take 24 hours before fully cured to the surface.
When is it advisable to use FolkArt Finishing Oil or FolkArt Bonding Primer & Sealer after completing a project painted with FolkArt Milk Paint?
Whether you use Finishing Oil or Bonding Primer & Sealer depends on the surface you’re using.
  • FolkArt Finishing Oil is best used on a surface that has been painted with FolkArt Milk Paint directly over raw, unfinished wood. FolkArt Finishing Oil will penetrate the layers of milk paint as well as into the unfinished wood surface. NOTE: The color of FolkArt Milk Paint painted surfaces will slightly darken and become rich in color after the finishing oil has been absorbed. If desired, test for any color changes in an inconspicuous place.
  • FolkArt Bonding Primer & Sealer is best used on a surface has been previously finished either, painted or stained, and has been sealed with a varnish. It is recommended to use FolkArt Bonding Primer & Sealer over the surface, before painting, as well as after completing the project. NOTE: Be sure to allow ample dry time after applying the priming coat before painting and again after completing the project before applying the protective coat.
What types of surfaces can I use FolkArt Home Decor Chalk paint on?
FolkArt Home Decor Chalk can be applied to many different types of surfaces such as finished and unfinished wood, terracotta, metal/tin, canvas, paper mache and plaster.
It can be applied to ceramic and glass surfaces; however, the paint is not dishwasher safe. Fabric surfaces can also be painted using FolkArt Home Decor Chalk, but the surface is not machine-washable. When decorating glass, ceramic and fabric surfaces, your project should be used as a decorative accessory only to be lightly cleaned using a damp cloth when needed.
When using Martha Stewart Crafts ® Glow-in-the-Dark Finish, what tools should I use?
Always use a soft bristle brush. Using a foam brush may add air bubbles to your finish.
Will FolkArt Milk Paint stain my clothing?
FolkArt Milk Paint can penetrate your clothing the same as when working with acrylic paints; however, it can be washed out immediately while wet using FolkArt Brush Plus and water. It is suggested that while crafting with FolkArt Milk Paint, wear old or protective clothing.
How should I apply the Barnwood Tint to my project surface?
After properly loading the FolkArt Shortie Brush with Barnwood Tint, apply the tint directly to the unfinished wood surface by brushing long, smooth strokes. Do not allow the tint to pool or puddle in areas.
NOTE: Wipe surface with a paper towel or soft, lint-free cloth to remove any excess Barnwood Tint. After the first step of Barnwood Tint has been applied, allow to completely dry (approximately 4 hours) before applying the Barnwood Wax.
