Preparing Fabrics for Painting: Before painting, wash and iron fabric as instructed on the garment label. Do not use fabric softener, dryer sheets, or spray starch; these products can prevent the paints from adhering properly. Most denim fabrics should be washed 2-3 times in hot water to thoroughly remove sizing in the fabric. Place a cardboard backer covered with wax paper or plastic wrap behind the area to be painted and tape or pin the fabric in place.
Transfer patterns to pants and jacket using photo for placement.
Paint flowers with Rose Shimmer, Magenta, and Wicker White with Lemon Custard centers.
Paint leaves with Peridot.
Loosely outline design and add scrollwork with Silver Sterling Metallic Paint and liner brush.
Folk Art® Fabric™ Brush-on paints are dry to the touch in 24 hours and cure in 72 hours. Heat setting is recommended for best durability. Allow the painted design to dry overnight. Heat set the painted piece using a dry iron and a pressing cloth over the painted fabric. Place the iron on the painted item for 10 seconds. Do not slide the iron across the fabric. For more delicate fabrics, shorten the heating time.
To heat set items painted with brush-on paints and embellished with dimensional paints, turn the item inside out and place in a clothes dryer on gentle cycle for 30 minutes on the highest setting allowed for the type of fabric used. Do not iron over dimensional paint.
To best preserve your work of art, hand wash in cold water and air dry, especially if your design includes dimensional paint. For painted items without dimensional accents, you may turn the item inside out to machine wash in cold water and dry on the gentle cycle.
