  • Fabric Shears
  • Sewing pins, needle, thread and a sewing machine
  • Paper towels
  • Container for water
  • Palette
  • Stencil tape

Instructions

Preparation

  1. Refer to the Basic Stenciling Tips for information on using Martha Stewart Stencils.

Lobster Pillow

  1. Cut two 15” x 15” linen fabric squares (one for the pillow front and one for the back). Position lobster icon stencil on fabric in the center. Stencil an Indigo lobster using a medium dauber. Lift the stencil and carefully realign just above or just below the first stenciled lobster. Repeat stenciling until the entire center vertical row is complete including portions of the lobster running off the fabric edges.
  2. Flip the lobster direction and create two stenciled vertical rows to both sides of the first row. Continue stenciling the vertical pattern of lobster icon designs until the fabric is covered. NOTE: Carefully lift the stencil while the paint is still wet, check the backside of the stencil for paint residue before continuing to stencil. Let dry.

Salmon Square Pillow

  1. Cut two 15” x 15” linen fabric squares (one for the pillow front and one for the back).  Using stencil tape, create a 12” x 12” square. Add a second row of stencil tape to create frame as shown.
  2. Using medium foam pouncer and Wild Salmon, paint frame. Let dry. Carefully remove stencil tape.
  3. Stencil a Wild Salmon fish design in the lower left corner (inside the painted frame) using a small dauber. Lift stencil and allow to dry.

Crossed Oars Pillow

  1. Cut two 15” x 15” linen fabric squares (one for the pillow front and one for the back). Stencil the oars Wet Cement using a small dauber.
  2. Mask outside the small stripes with stencil tape and stencil Wild Salmon and Habanero stripes. While paint is still wet, carefully remove stencil. Let dry.

Clean Up

  1. Wash all stencils, brushes, and tools immediately after use before the paint dries.
  2. Cleaned stencils should be stored on the backer sheet for future use.

Finishing

  1. Allow the painted project to dry 72 hours and then heat set to enhance the project's durability.
  2. After heat setting the fabric squares, lay one stenciled square right side up. Position over it one plain square. Hold together using straight pins.
  3. Sew around three sides using a 5/8” seam allowance. Clip all for corners on a diagonal.
  4. Reverse the sewn pillow by turning it right side out.
  5. Insert the pillow form and then hand stitch the final side closed.
