Other Supplies

Wooden owl cutout, 5.5" x 8.5" Journal, Scrapbook papers for owl, One pair of medium buttons, One pair of small buttons, Cotton embroidery floss, Alphabet letters from magazines, Tracing paper, Pencil, Scissors, Brush basin, Paper towels, Foam plate, Hot glue

Instructions

JOURNAL PREP

  1. Paint the entire cover Opaque Soft Gel White to provide a solid surface.
  2. When dry, lay the book open (pages down) and lightly spray with Bright Pink, Yellow and White Color spray. Let dry.
  3. Print the Tree Pattern onto tracing paper.
    • TIP: Cut the tracing paper to fit an 8.5" x 11" sheet of printer paper then tape the tracing paper and printer paper edges together. This will help the tracing paper feed through the printer/ copier.
  4. Once printed onto tracing paper, remove the printer paper then trim the tracing paper to fit the journal cover.
  5. Decoupage in place using traditional Mod Podge techniques. Let dry.

TREE

  1. Using a 3/8" flat paintbrush, paint within the tree pattern lines Transparent Soft Gel Sepia. Lightly paint the "ground" Sepia too.
  2. Using a ¼" dauber loaded with Opaque Soft Gel Permanent Green Light, randomly paint small "leaves."
  3. Load a No. 1 script liner with Opaque Soft Gel Permanent Green Light and paint a few sprigs of grass at the base of the tree.
  4. Paint a few darker leaves using Transparent Soft Gel Hooker's Green.

OWL

  1. Trace the wood owl cutout onto tracing paper to create a template. Use this template to cut coordinating scrapbook papers for each layer of the owl. Mod Podge onto the owl.
  2. Shade the decoupaged owl edges using the Medium Foam Applicator loaded with Transparent Soft Gel Indian Yellow. Shade the second owl layer with Transparent Soft Gel Sepia.
  3. Create a stack of button eyes. Layer the small button over the medium size button. Thread embroidery floss through the button holes and tie a double knot, trim excess floss.
  4. Hot glue two button eyes in place.

FINAL STEPS

  1. Cut letters out of magazines to spell out "WISE WORDS." Mod Podge where desired onto journal front.
  2. Paint a shadow effect under the letters with Transparent Soft Gel Sepia.
  3. Using the ¼" dauber, add dots of Transparent Soft Gel Quinacridone Red randomly over the cover, and owl's ears, wings and inner body.
  4. Hot glue the owl in place onto the branch.
  5. Finally, accent the edge of the journal with Transparent Soft Gel Indian Yellow loaded on a Medium Foam Applicator.
